Thankful for our Thanksgiving Week

We had a wonderful Thanksgiving week! Yes, the whole week!
Robert's brother and his family came from CA to visit! We hadn't seen them for two years.
It doubled the people in the house and there was always something going on.
We started out with a bit of excitement when our oven broke Sunday morning. We thought of microwavable things to eat for lunch, and for dinner Robert built a fire and put the grill over it. We cooked up chicken and baked potatoes for dinner and finished off with some s'mores! (Robert did get the oven fixed the next day.)
Monday we had to take care of some coughing boys before we could really play.
We went to the park and out to eat (for my niece's birthday) and back to the house for cake and ice cream. It was so sweet of her to want to celebrate in GA with her cousins (her birthday had been the week before). When we would talk to her on the phone she would say how much she missed us and how she couldn't wait to see us and asked if I could make her a cake. When she came in the door she gave multiple huge hugs, smiling from ear to ear.
Tuesday we went to the Botanical Gardens in Atlanta. It was great seeing the gardens in fall colors and the kids had fun running around and looking at everything. They had an area set up with trains for the holidays, each cousin had their favorite car and would run around the display following it.It was gorgeous walking around.
Alyssa became a favorite cousin and had a cute baby at her hip or by her side most of the week.
The statues around the gardens are so fun.
I always save the Children's Garden for last, the kids loved running through the different areas.
It was more overcast and chilly than expected. Robert was looking pretty styling as he used Natalie's jacket on to warm up a bit. (He'll probably have me take down the picture, so enjoy it while it's here.)
There was a trip to Larry's to see the donkeys and look for walking sticks.Whenever we were at home, there were games of soccer (kids against adults, and in the Beckstead family there is no mercy!) and jumping on the trampoline whenever the mood struck. There were many games played inside and hours at the Lego table.
My brother Thomas came in on Thanksgiving day, and stayed the rest of the weekend.
He got here just in time for our Thanksgiving feast. Gordon made an amazing turkey (setting it in a brine for the day before). His gravy was liquid turkey. I think they'll have to come out for Thanksgiving every year! While we let our feast settle, so we could eat some pie, we were entertained by the cousins, headed up by Alyssa, who put together and performed a Thanksgiving play entitled: The Curse of the Thanksgiving Turkey! It was a tale of a family trying to get their Thanksgiving turkey who didn't want to get caught!
Logan finally saved the day by pushing the crazed turkey into the oven to cook.
We were all laughing - especially at a recurring jab at my beet and apple soup that Alyssa included in the play.
The play was a perfect prelude to enjoying our pies!
The weather became a bit more rainy the next day, so we took the opportunity to head indoors and do some bowling. You have to love the technology that allows lane bumpers to go up and down according to the bowler.
The ball heading down the lane was exciting enough, knocking down pins even better!
Jake joined the big boys team, all the girl cousins were together and Amanda and I bowled with the younger boys. Need I mention that the Beckstead competitive nature skips no generation nor gender nor game being played. It's a good thing we love being together and playing together. They were a couple of great games!
It was sad to say good-bye and everyone was missed immediately. The week went by too quickly.
But how grateful we were to have family visiting and that we are blessed enough to have a feast on our table and the ability to enjoy so many activities together.
A Very Thankful Thanksgiving Week!

Happy Thanksgiving!

I love this kind of math!
As we get ready for Thanksgiving tomorrow, I hope that I have continually expressed, daily, thanks to my Heavenly Father for all the blessings I have. I also hope that Thanksgiving is one of the many days in which I show my gratitude to those around me who bless my life.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Girl Time!

Last weekend, the girls and I went out to dinner and then did a little shopping - mostly looking.
The girls started getting a kick out of trying on boots. And would look for the craziest ones.It reminded me of when my friends and I would look for the shoes with the highest heel to try on and walk around in.
Good times!

Bribery

So, it was time for Logan to sleep the night in his own bed - especially after a week of waking up multiple times and coming in bed with me (he is a teeth grinder).
I set up a "deal" - if he could sleep the night in his own bed for a week, he could get a Lego set!
The first couple of nights, when he would wake up, he would cry and tell me he didn't want a Lego set.
Then he woke up and came into my room and asked if I could put him back to bed. When I laid him down and tucked him in, he said "Thank you, mom. Good night."
The rest of the week he didn't wake up once!
He started counting down the days to the Lego set.
He picked an Atlantis one.

It has continued to work, as he has slept the night in his bed since (I'm crossing my fingers and hoping I'm not speaking too soon).
I LOVE Lego bribes! They always work.

It took 13 years, but . . . .

. . . Alyssa is finally a teenager!

Logan has been super excited for birthdays, and Alyssa's wasn't any different. In the background you can see the "Happy Birthday" poster we all draw/write on for the birthday person.
Alyssa came home off the school bus holding a bouquet of flowers. She had been called down the office during school to find them waiting for her. The card said, "Happy Birthday Alyssa, from your biggest fan" written in Robert's handwriting.
Natalie got mad because she said she was Alyssa's biggest fan and when Robert got home there was a discussion as to the definition of "biggest."
For her birthday dinner, Alyssa picked spiral ham, cornflake potato casserole, and Pillsbury Grands Flaky Layer rolls (I'm not offended, my homemade rolls have been lacking lately). For her cake, mint oreo with chocolate and mint chocolate chip ice cream cake (I put a layer of hot fudge topping as the middle). The picture below shows Natalie singing happy birthday to Alyssa (along with the rest of us, but we aren't in the picture).
It was really yummy!
Logan couldn't wait to open gifts, and when Alyssa got home, tattled on the only gift she didn't know that we were giving her. She enjoyed opening up gifts from her grandparents. The gift she didn't know about, until Logan spilled the beans, was the weighted blanket I made her - black and UGA pink. She also got the two books she wanted: a Thesaurus and her own copy of Preach My Gospel.
After the festivities she lounged out with her Thesaurus and blanket.
(please disregard the clean clothes on the floor and the vacuum)

I can't believe I have a teenager!
She's fabulous, so we think we'll keep her!

Happy Halloween!

Halloween couldn't come soon enough in this household. Everyone knew what they wanted to be. With a week to go I really needed to get out and find those costumes (we already had Alyssa's made, from a theme party a few months ago). Alyssa went as a Fate - complete with scissors ready to snipe your life line if you messed with her.
After toting around the boys to 4 different stores, we finally ended up at Target. We found exactly what everyone wanted. And they were on sale!
I had told Natalie that I had never seen a half angel/half devil costume (what she really wanted to be) and she'd better think of something else. She came up with two other options - both of which I didn't see at any store. Then, pushing the cart down the Halloween aisle at Target, Jake said "Look!" and there it was - half angel/half devil!Star Wars has been the focus of the boys this last year and they were thrilled to find costumes.
Logan didn't even mind wearing the Darth Vader mask.
And with the costumes on sale and the $10 gift card I got by getting my flu shot there, I added the light sabers that lit up.
Above, Logan is posing with the light saber being used as a gun.
And below both light sabers are in action!
Before we went trick-or-treating, the neighborhood had a pot-luck dinner and get together. It was great meeting more of our neighbors and chatting with the ones we already know. It was fun to see them again as we went trick-or-treating to their houses.
Logan loved running from house to house and usually remembered to say thank you before checking out what he got and exclaiming "mom, it's my favorite!"His word of the evening was "freaky." Which was used to refer to each decorated house.
He walked to whole time, even up the hill.
He was perfectly ok when it came time to go home and was excited to become the person who got to hand out the candy. At every noise he ran onto the porch to see if someone was coming.
He even picked out candy to give Jake and Natalie when they got home.
Here he is putting the candy he set aside for Natalie into her bag.
The next morning, when Logan woke up, he asked if we could get candy from people's houses again. When I told him no, that Halloween was over, he cried and wanted it to be Halloween again. But then he was ok when he remembered he had a bucket full of candy to eat.

Happy Halloween!
