Science fair time came around again. Here the 4th and 5th graders have to do a project - whether they enter into the official judging or not.
When asked what she wanted to do, Natalie wanted to make moldy bread.
We did some research, had her focus her question and hypothesis and began the experimentation. She tested to see if different types of bread (wheat, rye, oat, white, etc.) got moldy at different times.
Funny thing, the bread didn't mold - how does bread not get moldy?! - that should have been her question.
We had to restart the experiment - misting the zip-lock bag with the bread in it and wiping it with a cotton swap that had swabbed mold. This time we got our friends to swab actual mold in their house, not just dust like all the "how to grow mold" websites tell you to do.
We finally got mold!
The poster got made, her presentation put together, and done and now we don't have to think about science fair for another year.
And the moldy bread has now been thrown away!
By the way, wheat bread was the first to mold.
